Pedalling Mental Health & Well-being. 30/7/2010
Bike riders from Bacchus Marsh & Melton have been raising money for the past 2 years to promote mental health and well-being within the Community. Motivated by the tragic suicide of one of their fellow cyclists, the group has now raised over $15,000 towards the purchase of equipment and other resources for the mental health and counselling services offered by Djerriwarrh Health Services.
In recognition of the cyclist's contribution to improving mental health and well-being within the local community, Djerriwarrh Health Services has issued each of the cyclists a bike jersey.
Chief Executive of Djerriwarrh Health Services, Mr Bruce Marshall OAM, stated that; "I am very pleased to present the cyclist with the jerseys in appreciation of their support and to further promote mental health and a healthy lifestyle into the future".
Mr Marshall also confirmed that; "The funds raised to date have been instrumental to the establishment of the new Adolescent & Young Adult Counselling Service offered by Djerriwarrh Health Services within the local area".
The Adolescent & Young Adult Program offers counselling for young people aged between 12-24 years who are experiencing depression, anxiety, stress reactions, behavioural difficulties, relationship issues and development problems.
"While we clearly recognise that there is much more that needs to be done to promote the mental health & well-being within the community, the Adolescent & Young Adult Program is a significant step in the right direction," Mr Marshall stated.

The Australian Business Awards are a national program honouring organisations that demonstrate the core values of business excellence, product excellence, sustainability and commercial success in their respective industries through an established series of business and product award categories.
The Environmental Sustainability Award recognizes Djerriwarrh Health Services’ collection and re-use of waste water generated from dialysis and instrument sterilization processes as well as collection of rainwater. Commenting on winning the Environmental Sustainability Award, Mr Bruce Marshall OAM, Chief Executive, says “the Award reinforces our commitment to saving and recycling water at all of our health care delivery sites. I think the message is getting through to Victorian households about the need to save water. Healthcare services can also play their part in conserving this precious resource.”
The Innovations Award recognizes Djerriwarrh Health Services’ implementation of “world first” queuing technology to reduce the need for people to physically wait in queues, improve way-finding, automate the clinicians collection of patients, simplify data compilation, monitor patient waiting times, reduce the demand on reception resources and improve patient satisfaction. At their Melton Health site, Djerriwarrh Health Services treats over 50,000 patients each year.
